Donyi Polo Day
Donyi Polo Day is celebrated on December 31st each year to mark the establishment of the Donyi Polo Yelam Kebang in 1986.
It is a day to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh and to strengthen the connection between the people and their ancestral beliefs.
On Donyi Polo Day, people perform traditional rituals and offer prayers to the Sun (Donyi) and the Moon (Polo) as divine entities. Donyi and Polo are considered natural powers that sustain the globe and natural beings.
The celebration takes place in Ganggings, which are places of worship for the indigenous religion and faith of the Tani tribes. In 2022, Donyi Polo Day was celebrated in 302 Ganggings across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, including parts of Dhemaji and Majuli districts. The main celebration took place at the Central Donyi-Polo Yelam Kebang center in Pasighat.
